Small Mechanical Parts Inspection Machine

Description of application.
Visual inspection system for mechanical components, used in the automotive sector.

This system was requested by a manufacturer of sorting machines for small metal parts. His customer needed to check some of the parts needed for the fuel injection system for diesel engines.
The system is composed of a 5 megapixel gigaethernet camera mounted on an optical bench with collimated light backlighting system.
The vision software uses two control tasks with each one a series of dedicated measuring instruments, one for components to be measured linearly, and one for measuring circular and through-hole components.
System accuracy is 0.015 mm, in a field of view of 96 mm x 94 mm, with a processing time from the acquisition trigger of +/- 80 mSec.
A robot picks up parts from trays, after having been checked with other mechanical tools, and taken to the camera control area. The system can control two types of parts simultaneously without necessarily loading different recipes.
Again, I used the Cognex VisionPro development libraries and I have implemented a series of tools that can be easily configured by the operator through dedicated menus.
Activation of each individual instrument and setting of tolerance thresholds.

Below are images of some of the analysis tools used:

Measuring gauge
Point-to-point
Radius
Angle measurement
Corner to Corner
Control of diameter measurement and absence of metal chips
External diameters

Finally, during the runtime, the operator has the possibility to visualize every single result through the HMI (Human Machine Interface).

All measurements are transmitted via Profinet to the PLC that manages the selection machine for data logging for part traceability.
In case a piece is discarded, the relative image is saved in the hard disk for a possible subsequent evaluation by the product quality office.
