Nuts Checker.

Description of application.
Selection machine for metal pipe locking nuts for high pressure fluids.



The purpose of the system is to select the nuts that are introduced, by means of a linear vibrator on a wheel equipped with cavities and positioned so that three cameras can perform the following controls:
  • Integrity locking thread
  • Integrity of the hollow zone under the sealing thread
  • Absence of metal chips
  • Nut body measurement
  • Measuring the angles of the chamfer of the nut body
  • Measuring the inside diameter of the hole
  • Measuring the thickness of the hole chamfer
  • Measurement of the concentricity of the hole with the bevel of the hole itself
all this through 3 GigaEthernet 2-megapixel cameras, connected to an industrial PC using the award-winning software Cognex VisionPro. The camera used to check the thread integrity is equipped with a special lens called "pinhole".
The selection machine has been developed in collaboration with a company specialized in the construction of special automatic machines.
Developed to be able to select three different sizes of nuts: 17mm, 19mm and 20mm.
The vision software is fully configurable with regard to the setting of the discard thresholds and control instruments.
Below are images of some of the defects to be discriminated against:
  • lack of thread

  • damaged thread
  • damaged thread with the presence of metal scraps


  • presence of metal chips
  • presence of metal scraps wedged between the thread and the sealing bottom


  • presence of metal chips (camera 3)

The machine discriminates any waste and communicates it to the control PLC for the report of each lot that is controlled. The image of each discarded nut is saved in the hard disk of the PC, after which, at a certain time established by the quality office, all the images and the report are transferred to the central server of the company.
